Why are photos important after a motor vehicle crash?

Many thoughts will go through your mind in the minutes after a car crash. This is a stressful time, which means that your memory might not be as good as you’d expect. Because of this, it’s important to document the crash as comprehensively as possible. One way to get some information documented is by taking photos.

You must put safety first if you decide to take pictures. Never try to stand in active traffic lanes or do anything unsafe to get the photos you want. Instead, focus on getting the ones you can get while remaining safe.

What can photos show?

Crash photos can help to explain what happened by preserving important details, such as the location and position of all vehicles and any debris in the road. They can also document the current weather and road conditions.

Useful photos to consider taking if you’re able to include vehicle positions, license plates, traffic signals, location of broken glass, lane markings and skid marks. Additionally, photos that show anything that had an impact on the crash. This may include construction zones or signage that may have contributed.

Getting photos of the damage on the vehicles may also be important. These can show how force moved through the vehicle, which can provide information about what type of impact occurred. Try to get photos from several angles to show the whole picture.

Photos of your injuries can also be important. Some of these might not be evident at the scene of the crash. If you take photos later, make sure to have them timestamped to show when they were taken.

Car accident claims are often complex because they may involve multiple parties. Victims only have a limited time to file, so it may be beneficial to work with someone who can help them get the case together and filed so they can focus on healing.
