Those who are dedicated to giving back to their communities often leave an indelible mark on the lives of all whom they have touched. When a tragedy takes of the life of one of these generous individuals, their death often affects more than their families. One Arizona community is mourning the loss of a loved one after he was killed on the job.
The 51-year-old man was a 23-year veteran of the Phoenix Police Department. He was also a dedicated martial arts instructor and was planning his retirement in a few years. While he was on duty at the scene of a recent two-vehicle accident, another call came in requesting his assistance at a nearby incident.
Since the officer was close, he responded on foot. As he was crossing the road, a passing motorist struck and injured him. Though he was quickly transported for emergency treatment, he was pronounced dead at the hospital. It was not reported whether the motorist will face any charges in connection with this fatal accident.
Several community members expressed their dismay and sorrow regarding the officer’s death. Regardless of whether a motorist is held criminally responsible for these types of tragic deaths, families who have suffered the devastating loss of a loved one often struggle with the resulting monetary burdens. It may be possible to seek recovery of documented financial losses through the filing of a wrongful death civil lawsuit. An experienced attorney can provide assistance in collecting evidence and in navigating this type of litigation through Arizona’s civil justice system.
