5 Resolutions to Make 2017 the Safest Year

On Behalf of | Jan 19, 2017 | Articles

Resolve now to make 2017 the safest year yet.

It’s 2017 and you want to eat healthier, travel more and work even harder to get that promotion you’ve been hoping for. Great! Now, what about making a resolution that not only benefits yourself but everyone around you?

Staying safe seems to be an obvious day to day task that should run through people’s minds. You’d be surprised, however, with how many people don’t take this seriously and make rookie mistakes that put themselves and others in danger.

Here are 5 resolutions that you may want to add to your list so that 2017 will be the safest year for you and your family:

  • Don’t text and drive
  • Don’t drink and drive
  • Don’t procrastinate vehicle maintenance
  • Check for product recalls in your home
  • Become First Aid/CPR/AED certified

Don’t text and drive

Every year almost a half million of people are killed or injured from texting and driving in the U.S. Anything that requires you to take your hands off the wheel is extremely dangerous and texting just so happens to be the most popular distraction for drivers. Decide this year to turn your phone off when getting behind the wheel or simply putting it somewhere so it won’t distract you.

Don’t drink and drive

If you know you’ll be drinking, make sure to designate someone to stay sober in order to get you and others home safe. The accident rate for drinking and driving has only increased over the past couple years. Decide this year to decrease that number and don’t drink and drive.

Don’t procrastinate vehicle maintenance

We all have had those days where we get into our cars to find the tire pressure light on or the ‘Check Engine’ light flashing. Some will immediately get their vehicles into the shop, but some, if not most, will ignore the warning lights until it’s too late. Procrastinating vehicle maintenance can cause accidents, which cause all sorts of problems. Decide this year to get your vehicle repairs done immediately rather than waiting until the last minute.

Check for product recalls in your home

Thousands of products are recalled or found unsafe each year which prevents injuries or deaths. Keeping up on product recalls around your house (children’s toys, medicine, car tires, beds, ceiling fans, etc.) can keep you, your family and home guests safe. Decide this year to check up on product recalls. (Up-to-date list of product recalls can be found at www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/ )

Become First Aid/CPR/AED certified.

It’s never a bad idea to learn how to use First Aid or how many breaths to do when performing CPR. Anything can happen when you’re out and about or even in the comforts of your own home. Decide this year to get certified. You may just save a life.

As important it is to make personal goals, it’s also important to make goals that keep you and others around you safe. Decide now to make 2017 the safest year so far!
