3 Tips for Motorcycle Safety

3 Tips for Motorcycle Safe Summer Riding

There is little that compares with the freedom of a summer ride on a motorcycle. But summers here in the desert are just a little different than they are in other parts of the country; the heat we experience can be fatal if the right precautions are not taken. So keep yourself safe by doing these three vital things:

Wear a helmet

Whether it is summer or not, you should always wear a helmet. With our heat it is imperative that the helmet you use is one that is well ventilated, allowing your head to stay cool and keeping condensation from forming on your face shield.

Stay hydrated

In the desert, we are well aware of the need for water. Always stay well hydrated by bringing water with you and drinking it frequently. When dehydrated, the body systems you rely on to stay alert and alive start to shut down. Couple that with the inherent risks of a motorcycle and you could be in real trouble. By drinking plenty of water to stay cool and hydrated, you will be able to stay in control of yourself and your bike.

Be aware of heat exhaustion

A very real danger of summer riding in Arizona is getting heat exhaustion or even heat stroke. Be aware of your body and the signs it is giving you of a dangerous rise in temperature. Some indicators that your body is overheating are:

  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Cramps
  • Confusion

If any of these symptoms set in, be smart and pull off of the road. Find a cool place to rest, drink plenty of water and give your body the opportunity to regulate itself down to a safe temperature. Take as much time as you need to fully recover before you do any more riding. It is better to give your body a break than to break your body down.

Enjoy your summer of sun and freedom on your motorcycle. And be sure to follow these simple tips to make sure that this summer isn't your last.
